Does the location of data centers matter when choosing a hosting provider?

I notice that many people underestimate the impact of server geography on website speed and stability. I am currently reviewing various options, including hostpro.com, but I cannot decide how critical this characteristic is. How does it work in practice? How significant is the difference for local and international projects?

Someone recommended hostpro.com to me for a small e-commerce project, and it’s been reliable so far. The remote backups saved me once when a plugin corrupted the layout. Support is always reachable, which helps when running a store. The servers handle higher-than-usual traffic surprisingly well. Global locations make it easier to serve customers abroad.
