Monitoring server performance

I want to share detailed instructions for monitoring server operation. With this guide, you can automatically collect statistics on the operation of your server, as well as receive a detailed report and notification of problems.

  • A monitoring server is one that monitors… other servers. Or monitors anything for that matter - as long as it has the means to:

    1. Get data. I.e. poll for, and receive data about monitoring targets - be it other server’s performance, uptime and other data, applications, services, websites, etc.
    2. Store that data somewhere for review, visualization, analysis.
    3. Optionally, provide decision making, capacity planning and incident response tools that help improve reliability, performance, uptime, and… predict future.

Bottom line, a monitoring server is a server that has monitoring software installed on it, and performs monitoring (and often associated alerting, and visualization) duties.

    Examples:

    • Solarwinds NPM, SAM, other monitoring modules.
    • Nagios
    • Datadog
    • many others
