Cloud Infrastructure management is the blanket term used to describe the processes and tools (and the people) needed to effectively monitor/administer/control all the aspects of a company’s virtual hosted environments.
Cloud Infrastructure refers to the hardware, virtualization, storage, and networking components that provide the foundation needed to house and run applications and data in these virtualized environments. Together, these replicate the traditional servers, switches, firewalls, (etc) formerly used by companies to house and manage their applications.
Most often, a Cloud Infrastructure is provided by one of the “Big Three” Cloud Providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. In addition to those, however, some large companies will host their systems and data in their own privately-hosted Cloud environments.
The “Big Three” Cloud Providers were (are) game-changers when it comes to fast and cost-effective deployment of virtual servers. They’ve largely supplanted traditional hardware servers which traditionally resided at a company’s offices (in a “server room” ) or at data centers, where companies “rented” use of servers for their applications and databases.
Cloud providers often provide tools to monitor and manage their Cloud Infrastructures, but many customers have added 3rd party tools to allow better visibility to their clouds. These tools augment the existing tools to provide tighter administration, enhanced security, and better cost management.
